Confronting perimenopausal women’s knowledge of coronary heart disease with their health behaviours. Controversial role of hormone replacement therapy in the protection of coronary heart disease

Background

The specific health issues concerning older women have become a growing issue since their longevity is on a rise and the world’s population is growing and getting older at a quick pace.

Aims

This paper discusses the various roles of physiotherapy to ward the promotion of positive ageing in women with an emphasis on prevention, living independently, and the enhancement of overall well-being.

Material and methods

This paper retrospectively analyses the relevant literature and best applications of physiotherapy prevention with specific age-associated conditions in women with emphasis on sarcopenia and osteoporosis, fall prevention, decline in cardiovascular health, menopausal problems, and dementia.

Results

Physiotherapy in the form of strengthening and balance training, conditioning, pelvic floor rehabilitation, and community-centred physiotherapy has a favourable impact on the achievement of optimal musculoskeletal health, reduction of disability, improvement of mental health, and prevention of chronic illnesses. Advocacy and education on the promotion of active living as well as the alignment of physiotherapy with global public health goals such as the WHO’s Decade of Healthy Ageing is also part of their role.

Conclusions

Through autonomy, functional capability, and independence in activities of daily living, physiotherapy emerges as a cornerstone of preventive care and healthy ageing strategies for women across the lifespan.
